PHPA (also partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide or short for HPAM) is designed for easy mixing in drilling mud systems and to improve its dispersion to eliminate “fish eyes”, This occurs in field work when mixing either large quantities rapidly or mixing high polymer concentrations without good mixing equipment. In drilling fluids, PHPA is an anionic polyacrylamide and it can act as a viscosifier, flocculants, friction reducer and fluid-loss control agent. PHPA polymer also makes cuttings encapsulation and wellbore stability improvement, this will be helpful for slim hole and continuous-coring applications in PHPA drilling fluid system.
